Functions of riboflavin

Riboflavin is Vitamin B2, the second member of the B complex group, but is the functions of riboflavin that important?  It is water soluble and yet some is stored in the liver heart and kidneys.  Riboflavin is an orange powder that when taken in the body is excreted in the urine as a bright fluorescent yellow.  This is not harmful to the body.

Riboflavin is easily degraded and lost in the presence of light, therefore it is important to keep food covered or in containers that are not in direct light.  This of course means that sun dried food has very little Vitamin B2 in it.  The regular cooking does not affect riboflavin, but if cooked in large amounts of water, this will cause Vitamin B2 to be drained out of the food.

Another way to destroy Vitamin B2 in your body is to take sulfa drugs or drink alcohol.

The functions of riboflavin are many.  Vitamin B2 is absolutely essential for general health.

•    Involved in many chemical reactions in the body and is essential     for normal tissue maintenance.
•    Aids digestion and helps in the functioning of the nervous system.
•    Prevents constipation
•    Promotes healthy skin, nails and hair
•    Strengthens the mucous lining of the mouth, lips and tongue
•    Plays an important role in the health of the eyes and alleviates eye strain
•    Counteracts the tendency towards glaucoma
•    Provides vigor and helps to preserve the appearance and feeling of youth

The functions of riboflavin or Vitamin B2 in our body systems are many and vital.  It is important to get the necessary nutrients into your body through natural foods.  That is the way your body was meant to function.  However take supplements if you need to, but first know what your body is taking and slowly build your nutritional health.
